I was rear-ended while I was pregnant with my second child and my dd was 18 mo. It was not a serious car accident but I was in agony with a whiplash. I was barely able to care for my toddler. I had cleaning ladies provided by my automobile accident insurance to clean the house and my husband washed all the cloth diapers as I couldn't lift the pail anymore.

My dd lived in my mayawrap but I was very concerned about how I was going to carry the new baby. My new baby arrived 5 weeks early and we came home after a week in the hospital. My favourite carriers with my new dd was the Moby Wrap as it gave a really snug 2 shoulder carry and my podagi. When I was really sore and the baby needed to be carried then I would use the podagi in a traditional, around the middle, style without any straps on my shoulders. This gave me relief and I was able to still care for my baby the best way I knew how.

I have severely bulged disks in my lower back.
January 2008 I gave birth to twin boys but I was unable to pick them up on my own for the first 2-3 months after they were born, my core muscles were so compromised from the pregnancy.
By the time they were 4 months old, I was doing much better and started wearing one at a time (didn't realise I could wear both then). From 6 1/2 months I started wearing both, and still do now they are 18 months old.
As Steph says above - it needn't be the end of babywearing just because you have back injury if you are sensible about it.
